Hospital Receives Recognition from American Red Cross

Holzer Medical Center was recently named the Top Hospital in the Greater Alleghenies Blood Service Region by the American Red Cross.  This honor was given to HMC due to the monthly community Red Cross Blood Drives held at the Hospital, always on the first Wednesday of the month.  Blood bank

The Red Cross collected 350 units at these blood drives during 2007.

"We wouldn't be successful without the support of the employees and the community," stated Beverly Smith, MT, HMC Blood Bank Supervisor. "Those individuals who give their time, and the volunteers who staff the drive, are essential to the events.  We are very grateful to everyone who plays a part in our drives."

The Greater Alleghenies Region consists of over 100 Hospitals in six states, including Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

All blood types are collected during the monthly drives and the community is encouraged to donate.  The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will be Wednesday, June 4th at Holzer Medical Center.  For more information or to sign up, call (740) 446-5171.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fast prior to my blood work?

It depends on what the physician ordered. Usually the physician will explain how long he wants you to be fasting prior to your draw. During your fast, you may only drink water. Tests that typically require fasting are lipid panels, glucose, and hemoglobin A1C.

Can I get my results?

Yes but only if you sign a release. The registration personnel can give you the form to sign as you are being registered. Then you can either wait for your results or pick them up at your convenience. For your protection, we are not allowed to give results out over the phone.

Will the results be sent to my physician?

If your physician works in our facility, your results will print directly to his office. If your physician is not in our facility, we will fax the results to his/her office.
