What is Physical Therapy?Working with leg brace

Physical Therapy is about making you well. It involves the treatment of injuries, disorders, and diseases through physical methods, such as exercise, stretches, massage, and the application of heat.

These methods often help improve the mobility and function of limbs, conditioning muscles and helping to restore movement.

Physical Therapy is appropriate for patients with back and neck strains, knee injuries, and other musculoskeletal disorders. It is used with stroke patients and those suffering from other neurological deficits such as children with cerebral palsy. Physical Therapy is used after certain surgical procedures, such as building back strength in arm and shoulder muscles after breast surgery. It is even of benefit to patients with certain wounds, burns or diabetic foot ulcers.

Rehabilitation of muscles and limbs is often accompanied by education, making the patient aware of how they can best aid in their own recovery and maintain health improvements.

Physical Therapy Services at Holzer Medical Therapy Center

HMC Jackson Therapy RoomUpon your visit to Holzer Medical Therapy Center in Gallipolis or Jackson, a Physical Therapist will perform an evaluation of condition and needs.

Part of the evaluation is taking a history of your condition, and part involves performing various measurements and tests. These include tests for muscle strength and conditioning, range of motion, coordination and balance, flexibility, and more, depending upon your individual needs.

The evaluation aids your physical therapist in developing a treatment plan with appropriate goals to help you in recovering or improving your condition.

As treatment continues, your physical therapist becomes your partner in bringing you to the best state of health and mobility possible, monitoring your progress, adjusting treatments and foals, and consulting with your physicians and other health providers to facilitate your recovery.

Your Physical Therapy may involve:Walking with guides

  • Therapeutic exercise to restore strength, movement, balance, and coordination.
  • Massage and range of motion exercises to restore joint motion and increase flexibility.
  • Training to help with physical problems at home, work, or sports.
  • Learning new ways to get out of bed and transfer to a chair or wheelchair.
  • The use of crutches and other special mobility aids.
  • Education on how to maintain improvements and prevent future problems.
  • Special equipment training in the use of wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment.

Prosthetic Training

Patients with prosthetics, such as artificial limb replacements, may require physical therapy to condition and strengthen the involved limb, as well as specific training in the use of their prosthesis. Education in care of the amputation site is provided, as well as training in the performance of daily tasks using the prosthesis.

Balance and Coordination Training

Physical Therapy helps with balance and coordination problems that have occurred due to disease, trauma, stroke or other disorders. Therapy can take the form of balance activities and ambulation training.

Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is often effective as a part of your overall treatment plan, including stretching and therapeutic exercise. Ultrasound refers to very high frequency sound waves, far above the range of human hearing. Treatment with ultrasound can increase the flexibility of connective tissues including ligaments and tendons, as well as help with the flexibility of adhesions and scars.
