Nursing Overview

Each patient care unit has a Unit Manager who is responsible and accountable for the short and long term operations of their respective area.

Holzer strives to maintain each day, on each shift, an RN to patient ratio consistent with national recommendations and published studies. We staff our units based on a target census and assign patient care based on patient acuity. The target census is adjusted at least once per year, and sometimes more frequently. Patient acuity is measured annually and staffing mix is evaluated based on these results. By staffing according to a set census point, managers are able to schedule staff each day and each shift based on the target census. The target point is based on detailed census tracking, including the activity on the unit (admissions, discharges and transfers), observation patients, and inpatients.

A clinical ladder system is used to reward employees who assume additional responsibilities. For example: those who precept new orientees, provide in-service education, and participate on committees are recognized. The system features three levels: Level I (entry level), Level II, and Level III. Quarterly cash awards are offered, based on documented activities and supporting evidence.

Patient Satisfaction

Patient satisfaction is very important to us.

We are especially proud that our inpatients rank us in top 10-20 percent of hospitals our size. Patient satisfaction is measured using the Press Ganey survey tool, where inpatients, outpatients, and emergency room patients are asked to complete and return a written survey.

Our success in the area of patient satisfaction is a result of the hard work and dedication to quality care demonstrated by every employee. To both continue and improve these levels of service, we have nine customer service teams that focus on nine different areas: inpatients, outpatients, physicians, employees, leadership development, employee standards of behavior, measurement, and celebration. By focusing on these nine areas each and every day, we strive to provide the very best in patient care.
