American Cancer Society at Holzer Center for Cancer Care
The American Cancer Society and its volunteers play an important part in the services provided by Holzer Medical Center and the Holzer Center for Cancer Care.
Holzer Cancer Center’s lobby features a section dedicated to the American Cancer Society, featuring a Cancer Resource Center with brochures, a videotape library, and a designated volunteer ready to provide assistance. These services are offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, including a Patient Navigator who is available to aid cancer patients and their families in understanding the entire process.
Kim Painter is one of only fourteen Patient Navigators in the State of Ohio. She is assigned to Gallipolis and Gallia County and is able help "navigate" patients and their families through the cancer experience.
American Cancer Society and Holzer Medical Center also sponsor monthly Cancer Support Groups.
The American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society operates nationwide. Dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, the ACS is a community-based, voluntary health organization. It works to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish the suffering caused by cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
One of the oldest and largest volunteer based health agencies in the United States, ACS has more than 2 million volunteers.
The ACS started in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC).
In those early days, cancer claimed 75,000 lives a year in the United States alone and was rarely mentioned in public. The Society's founders set about to raise public awareness. They began by writing articles for popular magazines and professional journals, publishing Campaign Notes (a monthly bulletin of cancer information), and recruiting physicians throughout the country to help educate the public.
Today, the American Cancer Society is at work all across the United States, providing programs to detect cancer in its earliest stages, ensure proper treatment, and reduce the risk of cancer. You can learn more about the American Cancer Society and its many programs by visiting their main website at www.cancer.org.
