Healing Garden at Holzer Center for Cancer CareHealing Garden

Our Healing Garden provides a peaceful area for patients and their families, including a walking labyrinth, a reflecting pool, and benches for rest and meditation.

What is a Labyrinth

A labyrinth is not a maze or a puzzle.  While a maze had dead ends and false paths, a labyrinth has just  one path in to the center and one path out. As you walk a labyrinth, turning 180 degrees each time you enter a different circuit, your awareness shifts from right brain to left brain. This is one of the reasons the labyrinth can induce receptive states of consciousness. Walking these single path designs assists us with bringing together the analytical or rational part of our mind with the intuitive or spiritual part of our consciousness. Walking a labyrinth is an exercise for the mind, body, and spirit.

Many people choose to walk the path of a labyrinth as a tool for meditation, reflection, prayer, and comfort.  Each person's walk is a unique personal experience.  Some people find that it clears and centers their thoughts while others observe a spiritual experience.  Some feel a sense of well-being and balance, while others experience something as simple as a pleasant walk.

Labyrinths have been around for over 4000 years and are found in just about every major religious tradition in the world. They have been an integral part of many cultures such as Native American, Greek, Celtic and Mayan.
