Benefits of Chiropractic

Chiropractic science is a natural form of healing that is proven to be safe and effective in treating any pain relating to the spine. Pain is defined as a state of dysfunction and a protective response from the body. Chiropractors examine a patient to find this dysfunction and treat the body to eliminate the pain.

Patients often report experiencing feelings of relief, greater mobility, and a general sense of wellness after a treatment from a Chiropractor. Chiropractors can play a major role in preventative care, protecting against future pain and health problems.

Chiropractic Care for Spinal Whiplash

Chiropractors are leaders in the care of whiplash injuries, and more than any other type of physician, are trained to help restore movement after an accident, speed recovery time, and diminish any chronic symptoms that may develop.

Whiplash is not a disease but a description of how an injury occurred. When a person suffers a whiplash injury, their spine, usually the head and neck, are unexpectedly thrown one direction and then quickly rebounded in the opposite direction, causing the head to be “whipped around” on the neck.

To complicate matters, if the head is rotated even slightly to the right or left during the accident, the effects of the injury are increased. The vast majority of whiplash sufferers misalign their neck’s spinal bones (cervical vertebrae) and cause nerve, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle, and disc stress, as well as irritation or damage referred to as a vertebral subluxation. Research indicates that this condition is the most common source of pain and discomfort from whiplash injuries.

Immediate symptoms may include neck soreness or stiffness, perhaps accompanied by a headache. Various symptoms may develop in time including pain and/or numbness, and tingling between the shoulder blades, arms, hands, and fingers. Depending on the nerves affected, other symptoms may include ear ringing, dizziness, hearing loss, eye pain, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, nasal problems, low back pain, and even internal organ problems.

Whiplash sufferers sometimes have memory, thinking, vision, and psychological problems, even if there is no head or brain injury. Whiplash is a serious public health problem. Each year, three million people experience whiplash neck and back injury, and data collected by researchers show that nearly half of all Americans with chronic neck pain attribute it to car crashes. If you have ever been involved in an accident, visit Back to Health Chiropractic to ensure that you have healed as completely as possible. Trauma or injury from many years ago may be responsible for seemingly unrelated health issues today.

Chiropractic Care for Headaches

Dr. Good and Dr. RobinsonIf you have a headache, you're not alone. According to the latest research, 9 percent of men and 12 percent of women in the U.S. experience at least 1-2 headaches each month. Some are occasional, others frequent. They can be dull and throbbing, or cause debilitating pain and nausea.

Headaches have become a social and economic burden in the United States, as well as in other parts of the world. Medical appointments, tests and x-rays, prescriptions, as well as lost productivity all add up to an enormous cost.

Believe it or not, scientists have identified over 300 causes for headaches. Various pain-sensitive structures and tissues including the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, arteries, periosteal bone covering, and the upper cervical and facial nerves produce headaches when irritated or injured.

The most common headaches are cervicogenic, meaning problems within the neck, including muscle-tension headaches. Headaches are also caused by upper back muscular spasms; post-traumatic injuries associated with head/neck trauma ( i.e. whiplash); drug-induced headaches; and migraines.

Doctors of chiropractic successfully help thousands of individuals everyday obtain safe, effective, long-term relief from headaches, since most headaches have a spinal, muscular, or habitual component which a chiropractor has been trained to identify and treat.

New research shows that spinal manipulation, the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic, may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

"The majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck," says Nick Robinson, D.C. of Back to Health Chiropractic. "Today, people engage in more sedentary activities than they used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache. As a chiropractor, I know how tension in the spine relates to problems in other parts of the body, and can take steps to relieve those problems."

A few techniques that may be utilized at Back to Health include spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate stress on the body, nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins, and/or advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises, and relaxation techniques.

If it is found that a headache is due to a health problem that needs the care of another discipline, your chiropractor will refer you to an appropriate specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is that popping sound?

The “pop” sometimes heard is caused by air bubbles which form and pop as the joint moves fully during the adjustment.

Should I see a Chiropractor if I've been in a car accident?

If you are involved in an auto accident it is important to be evaluated to determine if there is a soft tissue injury. Because the symptoms from a soft tissue injury may not show up until 3-7 days after the trauma, a thorough chiropractic examination is very important. Pain changes how a body moves. Therefore, after the initial pain improves, the body may adapt to moving differently. Pain medication and muscle relaxants can mask the pain, but unless normal motion is restored, body motion will be unbalanced. Left untreated, the body adapts to the unbalanced pattern of motion, creating a chronic problem.

Everyone knows Chiropractic is effective for back pain. What else can Chiropractic help?

Doctors of Chiropractic effectively treat headaches, neck problems, shoulder, elbow, and wrist problems. Hip, knee, ankle, and foot conditions also respond well to conservative chiropractic manipulative therapy. Chiropractors specialize in neuromusculoskeleton (nerve-muscle-bone) and motion conditions.

How will chiropractic care help arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a mechanical irritation of the joint, usually due to unbalanced motion. The joint responds to the unbalanced and stressed motion with formation of bone spurs on the edges of the bone. Maintaining proper motion through a joint can reduce this mechanical damage. Osteoarthritis is different than rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that attacks the synovium of the joint (the thin layer of connective tissue that lines the capsule of a joint).
