Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I be in the recovery room before I go back to ASU or
my hospital room?
Your length of stay in PACU will depend on the type of surgery you had,
how quickly you wake up, and the amount of pain you are experiencing.
The usual recovery room stay is one hour.
Will I remember being in the recovery room?
Most patients remember very little regarding their recovery room
experience. Depending on your procedure and the type of anesthesia you
were given, you may not remember the first few hours after your surgery.
Will my family be able to come back to the recovery room with me?
The PACU is an open unit with curtains between each patient. Typically
family members are not permitted in PACU to protect the privacy of other
patients.
Will I experience pain after my surgery or diagnostic procedure?
Your comfort is very important to us. The nurses in ASU are experienced
in pain management. You will be asked to rate your pain on a scale from
0-10. Medication will be given according to the pain scale. We may not
be able to make you completely pain free, but our goal is to make you
comfortable and the amount of pain you are experiencing tolerable.
