Nursing Services

Patient satisfaction is very important to us. We measure how satisfied our patients are using the Press Ganey survey tool. Inpatients, outpatients, rehabilitation patients, and ER patients are asked to complete the survey and return it to us.

We are especially proud of that our inpatients rank us in top 10-20 percent of hospitals our size. Rehabilitation inpatients in our patient rehab unit rank us in the top 10-20 percent of rehab units surveyed by Press Ganey.

These rankings come as a result of hard work by our employees. We have nine customer service teams that focus on different areas: inpatients, outpatients, physicians, employees, leadership development, employee standards of behavior, measurement, and celebration. By focusing on these areas each and everyday, our nursing staff provides the kind of patient oriented care than enables us to achieve such high rankings.

Nursing at Holzer Medical Center

Nursing Service is a dynamic, growing service. Nursing care is provided by Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and Critical Care Associates. Supporting these individuals are unit secretaries and monitor technicians. Employees include full time, part time, and perdiem staff, usually working 12 hour shifts.

Each patient care unit has a Unit Manager who is responsible and accountable for the short and long term operations of their respective area. Holzer strives to maintain each day, on each shift, a Registered Nurse to patient ratio that is consistent with national recommendations and published studies. We staff our units based on a target census that is adjusted at least once a year, and sometimes more frequently, for patient acuity.

The benefits of staffing based on a pre-established census point (target census), is that it allows the manager to schedule staff each day, each shift, for a fixed point. This fixed point is based on detailed census tracking, including the activity on the unit, observation patients as well as inpatients.

Acuity is taken into account when patient care assignments are given. An RN float pool is under development with the goal to schedule a Registered Nurse each day, for each shift. The goal of the float pool is to provide an RN able to cover call ins, increases in census, and increases in acuity, etc.

Nursing Education

Nursing education is very important to us. We provide on site education and training for our staff. Tuition reimbursement is also available for those who desire to return to school.
A clinical ladder system is in place to reward and recognize those who precept new orientees, provide in-service education, participate on committees, and assume additional responsibilities.

There are three levels, Level I which is entry level, Level II, and Level III.

Cash awards are provided quarterly based on documented activities and supporting evidence. We actively support the schools of nursing in our area. We have nursing students join us for clinicals from Marshall University, University of Rio Grande, Shawnee State, Hocking Community College, Buckeye Hills Career Center. These students are encouraged to learn more about nursing by participating in our nurse extern program. The extern program is geared to hiring nursing students in nursing assistant positions, allowing them to work per diem for Holzer Medical Center while in school. This provides a positive work experience for both the student and the employer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the RN to patient ratios you have in place?
