Sleep Medicine

Visit with one of Holzer’s Sleep Medicine providers in Gallipolis or Athens, Ohio, for a full-service treatment and diagnosis for a variety of sleep disorders. We offer treatment for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, and we accept physician referrals to have an overnight sleep study done in our state-of-the-art sleep lab. We see patients ages 2 years and older.

Holzer Sleep Medicine providers are supported by our sleep technicians, who are Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT). We follow the guidelines for scoring sleep studies set by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, as well as guidelines set by Medicare.

Our philosophy has always been to bring excellence in Sleep Medicine to every part of our area.

Common Types of Sleep Disorders Treated at Holzer include:

  • Sleep Apnea
    Symptoms may include:
    • Breathing stops repeatedly during sleep, snoring, snorting, and gasping for breath
    • Excessive daytime sleepiness
    • high blood pressure
    • morning headaches
    • personality changes
    • rapid weight gain
  • Narcolepsy
    Symptoms may include:
    • Unable to stay awake despite a good night's sleep
    • may experience sudden muscular weakness when emotionally charged, vivid nightmares or momentary paralysis upon falling asleep or awakening
  • Nocturnal Myoclonus Syndrome
    Symptoms may include:
    • Often mistaken for insomnia, legs thrash or move during sleep
    • Other symptoms include aching muscles upon awakening and crawling or restless sensations in the legs

Services available include:

  • Polysomnogram (PSG): Diagnostic sleep study used for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. The most frequent sleep disorder is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which the most effective treatment for it is Positive Airway Pressure (PAP).
  • Pediatric PSG: Sleep study for pediatric patients above 2 years of age.
  • PSG with PAP Titration: Sleep study with PAP treatment for OSA.
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT): Daytime nap study, following a sleep study the preceding night, used in the diagnosis of Narcolepsy or Hypersomnia.
  • Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT): Daytime nap study used to test the ability to stay awake. Does not need to follow a sleep study.
  • Daytime PSG: Only for patients who are currently working third shift or midnights.
  • Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT): Diagnostic study done at home over two nights, used to diagnose sleep apnea only.

What Happens at the Sleep Lab?

First, you will fill out a history and a sleep study form. Then you will be escorted to a comfortable, private room where you are prepared for the overnight sleep study. As you fall asleep, your sleep patterns will be monitored for a minimum of six hours. Shower facilities are available for your convenience.

Special Needs & Staffing

  • Holzer Sleep Lab bedrooms and restrooms are handicap accessible. Your provider can state any special needs in the sleep study order, or the patient can call staff for available accommodations.
  • Each sleep lab is staffed with one sleep technologist to two patients. Due to staffing, someone is required to stay with patients who require assistance to get up or down when going to the restroom.
  • Patients from extended-care facilities or group homes must have someone stay with them.
  • We do not permit minors under 18 years of age to accompany an adult patient during the sleep study unless it is to care for an adult patient who needs assistance.

Number of Visits

  • A diagnosis of OSA requires two studies - first a regular PSG, followed by a titration study at a later date.
  • All other diagnoses require only one study.
  • A sleep medicine physician will treat any sleep disorders found in follow-up.
  • You will receive an appointment for follow up with the sleep medicine physician who read your sleep study.

Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Process

You will be asked at the time of the sleep study if you have a DME preference if you are diagnosed with OSA. If you do not have a preference, Holzer Sleep Medicine will refer you to a reliable DME company that accepts your insurance.

Follow-up appointments with a sleep medicine physician are scheduled 31-90 days after PAP setup, following Medicare guidelines.

Time Until Study

In an attempt to keep our wait times down, it is important to keep your appointment. If you cannot keep your appointment, please let us know immediately. *

*Holzer reserves the right to cancel the referral after one no call/no show or multiple appointment cancellations.

**Holzer reserves the right to terminate care if frequent no-shows/cancellations occur through multiple referrals.

Refusal of Care

You have the right to refuse care at any time during the sleep study. Holzer Sleep Medicine will inform the patient of the risks of going against medical advice.

Referral Process

We accept direct and indirect referrals.

  • Option 1: You can call our toll free number 866-28-SLEEP (866-287-5337) to make an appointment for a sleep evaluation with one of our sleep physicians to see if a sleep study is needed.
  • Option 2: You can also be referred by your physician. The referring physician is responsible for sending us a completed and signed referral form, current insurance and demographics, and clinical note explaining the need for a sleep study.

Once referred for a study, an appointment date is given to our pre-certification department to get authorization. Once authorization is obtained, we will send the patient a referral packet with the date and time of study as well as information about the study.

Insurance

Holzer accepts most insurances. See a list of accepted insurances here.

We use the Holzer Pre-Certification department to authorize each procedure, so it is not a burden to the patient or the referring provider.

If we are not able to authorize a procedure for one of our sleep centers, we will contact the patient and referring provider.

Insurance payment requires a minimum of six hours of study time.

Self-Pay

We accept self-pay patients who may not have insurance. This requires the patient to set up a payment plan with the Holzer Business Office prior to scheduling.
